Ali Laing,a transplant from Oklahoma, lives with her husband and six children in Woodland Park. They literally moved here for the mountains, which provide better health for her family and better views of God's creation, among other things. She's been homeschooling for eleven years, using Charlotte Mason's methods from the beginning. She is an extrovert, energized by being among the people; but she also loves to hermit away with a cup of coffee and a good book or a Masterpiece Theater series. Favorite subjects are theology, history, and classic literature; but music is her soul language. She dreams of belting out a chorus in Heaven one day with the strong and beautiful voice she regrettably doesn't have in this life. You may as well know up front that she played bassoon from middle school through college. Trust us, it will come up again.
Christy Simpson, moved to Colorado from Austin, TX in 2007. She adores her husband, who inspires her to grow deeper in her faith. Having always planned to homeschool her three children (ages 13, 10 & 9), Christy learned about Charlotte Mason early in her homeschooling journey, but has only been implementing her methods for the last three years. She loves playing board games with her kids, reading historical fiction and biographies, singing in her kitchen, and having coffee with friends. Relationships feed her soul. Christy can often be found listening to an audio book on her phone when she is not making lists and spreadsheets…lots & lots of them (it's an addiction).
Melanie, having grown up around the world as an Air Force brat and attending some amazing international schools, she never envisioned herself as a homeschool mom. Out of academic necessity and passion for her four children to love learning as much as she did, Melanie began the home education journey almost two decades ago when she couldn’t find a school environment that felt right. She and her husband, Dean, embraced a strong desire to create “remember-whens” and positive learning experiences in a Christ-honoring, cozy atmosphere at home, in the forest, and in other unique ways through Charlotte Mason’s ideals. She has graduated her oldest two (ages 20 & 21, who are seniors at college), and has two to go (ages 13 &15). When she isn’t hiking or exploring this great state with her family, you’ll find her curled up on the couch with a living book or at a coffee shop, not drinking coffee, with a friend chatting for hours.
Heather grew up in California, but has been traveling the world with her supportive husband and four children, thanks to Uncle Sam. When her husband's military career brought them to Colorado, they knew they were "home"! As a home school graduate, she always had a desire to give her children a similarly rich education. When she and her husband learned about Charlotte Mason's philosophy, they knew that that was the perfect fit for their family. Heather has enjoyed a full life working in radio, theater, and the music world, and loves traveling and adventures! Her most recent adventure took her to Washington D.C. for her husband's final assignment before retiring to Colorado. While she enjoyed their time there, visiting all the historical sites and museums, she is so glad to be back "home" in the mountains with her family and community.
Chelsey Halbert is a mom of four children (boy-8.5 girl-6, girl-4, girl-5months). Married to her high school sweetheart, they live in Monument, CO. She is originally from California, but grew up in Washington and North Carolina. Her family came as quickly as they could to Colorado ten years ago. She is a homeschooling graduate who now runs a small business from her home studio. She has been homeschooling using the Charlotte Mason method for the past three years. She loves spending time crafting, organizing her home, and spending time with other moms during play dates, coffee dates, or group activities. She is an avid Fixer Upper fan, loves reading, horses, coffee (maybe too much), anything pumpkin, and loves decorating for Christmas.
Melinda, an Oklahoma native, is loving her longtime dream of living in beautiful Colorado. She married her high school sweetheart and together they raise their nine children (no twins! 22, 18, 16, 14, 12, 11, 7, 5, 2). By God’s grace & goodness, they are all witty, hard-working, forgiving, and honest! She’s been involved in home education for over eighteen years and has graduated her two oldest using Charlotte Mason principles. She loves working as an artist, with the theatre, and in women's and children's ministries at church. You may find her on a hiking trail or at a coffee shop, deeply steeped in a twaddle-free book.
